HC Deb 13 March 1951 vol 485 c1291
49. Mr. Shepherd

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer the capital investment in industry in Great Britain for the year 1949, expressed as a percentage of the national product; and how this compares with 1939.

Mr. Gaitskell

Gross investment in industry in Great Britain in 1949 was approximately 9 per cent. of the gross national product and total investment about 18 per cent. No reliable estimates are available for pre-war years, but the percentage in 1949 for investment in industry was probably higher than in 1939 and for total investment probably about the same.
