HC Deb 25 July 1951 vol 491 c435
1. Major Guy Lloyd

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs which parts of the pre-war Japanese Empire have been ceded to or are now occupied by countries in the Russian sphere of influence under the Yalta and subsequent agreements with the British Government; and which parts still remain to be allocated among the signatories to the proposed Japanese peace treaties.

The Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs (Mr. Ernest Davies)

By the Yalta Agreement of 11th February. 1945, South Sakhalin and the Kurile Islands were to go to the Soviet Union. Those territories have, in fact, been occupied by the Russians since 1945, and Article 2 of the draft Treaty provides that Japan renounces her title to them. The draft Treaty does not provide for the allocation of any former Japanese possessions amongst its signatories.
