HC Deb 18 October 1950 vol 478 cc2022-3
10. Brigadier Medlicott

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if he has any further statement to make with regard to the efforts that are being made by His Majesty's Government, either direct or through the United Nations, to secure the return of the kidnapped Greek children.

Mr. Bevin

No, Sir. As the hon. and gallant Member is no doubt aware, this question will be discussed during the present session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Brigadier Medlicott

Would the Foreign Secretary make it clear that the Government have no intention of relaxing their efforts but will continue to press this matter to the fullest extent?

Mr. Bevin

I have taken the opportunity of referring to it, both directly and indirectly, on every available occasion, publicly and privately.

Mr. Pickthorn

Have His Majesty's Government been officially informed of Marshal Tito's reported offer to American senators that all the Greek children now on Yugoslav territory will be returned as soon as they are officially asked for?

Mr. Bevin

I have never heard of that.

Mr. Pickthorn

What about the information services?

Mr. Mott-Radclyffe

Could the right hon. Gentleman say whether a single kidnapped Greek child has yet been returned to its parents?

Mr. Bevin

Some have been sent to Australia. As to being returned to Greece, I have not heard of any.
