HC Deb 16 May 1950 vol 475 c1006
63. Colonel Crosthwaite-Eyre

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer in how many cases has permission been given to export notes or other tender as set out in Section 22 of the Exchange Control Act, 1947, to private individuals or commercial concerns, respectively; and for what reason was such permission given.

Sir S. Cripps

This information could not be produced without a disproportionate amount of work, but, apart from certain exceptional cases, permission to export sterling notes is given only for small amounts which are required to replenish bank tills for the purpose of meeting the requirements of travellers to this country.

Colonel Crosthwaite-Eyre

Can the Chancellor give any estimate of the total amount of bank notes which have been exported under this Section?

Sir S. Cripps

I am afraid not; the figures are not available.
