HC Deb 16 May 1950 vol 475 cc998-9
46. Sir H. Williams

asked the Lord President of the Council why it is proposed to requisition the premises of Mr. J. M. Williams of 105, Kennington Road, S.E.11, for the purpose of a car park for the Festival of Britain and thus destroy the value of the business that he has built up.

Mr. Ede

I have been asked to reply. I am informed that these premises are located in a small area being compulsorily acquired by the London County Council in order to provide much needed open space in the neighbourhood. The L.C.C. have, however, agreed with the Commissioner of Police for the Metropolis that, for the period of the Festival of Britain only, this area should form part of a larger area to be made available as a car park.

Sir H. Williams

Can the right hon. Gentleman tell me why this man's business, estimated as worth £4,000, should be destroyed without any compensation at all?

Mr. Ede

I will pass that inquiry on to my right hon. Friend.
