HC Deb 11 May 1950 vol 475 cc547-8
14. Dr. Barnett Stross

asked the Minister of Health how many local authorities have now sent to him their schemes for the reconditioning of houses under the 1949 Act; and what is the total number of houses covered by these schemes.

Mr. Bevan

As local authorities have been asked to discuss schemes informally before seeking approval, statistics of this kind are not available.

Dr. Stross

Is my right hon. Friend satisfied that for a real attack on this problem there is sufficient labour available without hindering the building of new houses?

Mr. Bevan

These reconditioning schemes will, of course, have to be considered in the light of the local labour and materials available for new accommodation as well, because one scheme must not jostle the other out of existence.
