HC Deb 10 May 1950 vol 475 cc355-6
16. Mr. Remnant

asked the Postmaster-General whether he will consult the National Federation of Sub-Postmasters as to the practicability of relieving sub-postmasters of attendance for telegrams after 6 p.m. on weekdays.

Mr. Ness Edwards

This matter has been under consideration for some time, in conjunction with the National Federation of Sub-Postmasters. The proposal gives rise to serious practical problems and further investigation is proceeding.

Mr. Remnant

While thanking the Minister for his reply, may I ask him if he is aware that these hard-working servants of the Crown are on duty for nearly 6C hours a week, and that as many of them do not receive more than two telegrams a week, between 5.30 and 7.0. they are in some need of alleviation of their hours of duty?

Mr. Ness Edwards

On the other hand, I am always being pressed to provide a regular and available service. I agree that there are difficulties in this matter. and it will be further investigated
