HC Deb 10 May 1950 vol 475 c368
37. Mr. J. Grimston

asked the Secretary of State for Air what alternative proposals are being considered for the flying boat depot ship "Adastral"; and what the final cost of conversion is likely to be.

Mr. Crawley

The alternative proposals considered for this ship were to complete it as a flying boat depot ship or to use it for the carriage of Service personnel and freight. It has been decided on financial grounds to adhere to the decision to place the ship in reserve.

Mr. Grimston

Are we to understand that the £350,000 that has been spent on the ship is entirely wasted?

Mr. Crawley

No, not entirely wasted. The sum was not as high as that; it was £315,000. All that expenditure will still stand, as the ship will be able to give assistance very much more quickly if an emergency arises.

Sir H. Williams

Can the Minister say for what purpose the ship is now wanted, because it is of no use for its original purpose?

Mr. Crawley

It is wanted as a flying boat depot ship.
