§ 31. Commander Maitlandasked the Secretary of State for Air if he is aware that considerable damage was caused to property in Skegness, Burgh, and other neighbouring localities by blast from heavy bombs dropped on the bombing range at Friskney, Lincolnshire, during the week ended on Saturday, 18th March; and if he will state what steps he is taking to investigate the causes and to prevent a recurrence.
§ Mr. A. HendersonA full investigation is being made into the matter. In the meantime, all bombing practice on the range has been suspended.
§ Commander MaitlandDoes the right hon. and learned Gentleman realise that the information was given to his Depart 386 ment shortly after the first occurrence, that no action was taken and that considerable damage was done the following week-end? Does he realise that very considerable sums will be asked for from the Treasury to meet the cost of repairs? Why was action not taken very much more quickly?
§ Mr. HendersonAs to the question of considerable damage, the investigation is to ascertain the extent of any damage which may have taken place. Compensation will be paid in respect of any damage which can be shown to be attributable to this bombing practice. I can only regret it if there was delay, but, as soon as it was brought to my notice I took action to stop the bombing until the investigation has been completed.
