HC Deb 21 March 1950 vol 472 c1760
51. Mr. Osborne

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the purchasing power of the pound sterling to the nearest convenient date as compared with 20s. in 1945.

Sir S. Cripps

About 16s. 2d. in January, 1950.

Mr. Osborne

Does the right hon. and learned Gentleman think that it is an encouragement to people to save when the longer they leave money with the Socialist Government the less valuable it becomes?

Sir S. Cripps

The only encouragement is that it remains more valuable than in other countries.
