HC Deb 13 March 1950 vol 472 c723
3. Mr. Emrys Hughes

asked the Minister of Works what was the number of building workers in Scotland employed on the building of municipal houses on 1st March; and the numbers of building workers employed on other work.

Mr. Stokes

The latest date for which complete figures are available is 31st January when there were 28,386 building workers employed on the erection of municipal houses, including site preparation, in Scotland. On the same date, there were 91,075 men engaged on other forms of building work.

Mr. Hughes

Will the Minister use his influence to ensure that some of the 91,075 are transferred to the building of municipal houses, which are so badly needed?

Mr. Stokes

Yes, Sir, but I must inform my hon. Friend that a great many of the 91,075 are, in fact, already engaged on building of a non-licence nature.
