HC Deb 12 July 1950 vol 477 cc1359-60
69. Mr. Peter Smithers

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether it has yet been possible to begin sustained yield forest management in any part of British Guiana; and to what extent creaming of forests and the felling of immature greenheart referred to in.the Forest Department Report for 1948, paragraphs 29 and 30, still continues.

Mr. Cook

Yes, Sir. Provision for systematic working and silviculture control has been introduced into the new forest leases and in the renewal of old leases. Undersized timber is not now being cut, with the exception of small-size greenheart piling for the American market, which is cut under silvicultural control.

Mr. Smithers

Can the Minister say whether there is now adequate forest personnel to enforce the excellent regulations which have been made?

Mr. Cook

This is being attempted, as far as possible, but if the hon. Member would like fuller information we can supply him with a copy of the Department's report.
