HC Deb 10 July 1950 vol 477 c943
38. Mr. Steward

asked the Minister of Food if he is satisfied that the recent relaxation of the order relating to the bacon ration for caterers, now covering an eight-weeks' period is giving satisfaction; and whether he will now make a similar concession to consumers, thus allowing the bacon ration to be purchased, if desired by the consumer, once every four weeks.

Mr. Webb

The new arrangements seem to be working well. Bacon, however, is very perishable, and to put the domestic ration on a four-week basis would be to risk serious deterioration of quality.

Mr. Steward

Does the Minister think that bacon is more perishable than butter or margarine? If he is arranging this privilege in the case of butter and margarine, what is the reason for not allowing it' in the case of bacon?

Mr. Webb

Bacon is very funny stuff, and I am satisfied that it would be wrong to adopt the suggestion made by the hon. Gentleman.
