HC Deb 05 July 1950 vol 477 cc466-7
35. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies the reasons for the prosecution of Dr. Maja and several prominent persons in Nigeria.

Mr. J. Griffiths

In consequence of an article in the Nigerian "Daily Service," charges under the Nigerian Criminal Code of publishing seditious matter were preferred against the editor, Mr. Akintola, and the Service Press Limited, of which Dr. Maja is Chairman. Similar charges have also been made against the Zik Press Limited, Mr. I. Coker, editor, and Mr. M. N. Ojiki in respect of an article in the "West African Pilot." Mr. Akintola was found not guilty and discharged on 29th June. The other cases are still before the Court, and, therefore, sub judice.

Mr. Sorensen

Can my right hon. Friend say when the trial is likely to take place?

Mr. Griffiths

No, Sir, not without notice.

Mr. Sorensen

Is it possible for Members of the House to examine the nature of the charges?

Mr. Griffiths

I will consider that.
