HC Deb 14 December 1950 vol 482 c1318
12. Mr. Maudling

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he intends to issue a direction under Section 5 of the Cinematograph Films Act, 1948, in respect of the film, "Green Grow the Rushes."

Mr. H. Wilson

A direction under Section 5 (2) of the Cinematograph Films Act, 1948, may be made by the Board of Trade only after a recommendation by the Selection Committee appointed for the purpose. No application has been made for the Selection Committee to consider this film, and the question of making a direction does not, therefore, arise.

Mr. Maudling

In view of the fact that the last time the President issued such a directive the results of the public exhibition were, to put it mildly, disappointing, will he exercise very great care about the issuing of any further such directives?

Mr. Wilson

No, Sir. I will act in accordance with the advice of the Committee set up under the statute enacted by Parliament. I think it would be wrong for me or any other Minister to interfere in the matter of this film. We must rely on the advice of the committee set up under the statute.
