HC Deb 06 December 1950 vol 482 cc358-9
48. Brigadier Terence Clarke

asked the Minister of Defence what advice he received from the Chiefs of Staff before agreeing to ship Centurion tanks to Egypt.

Mr. Shinwell

It is not the practice to diclose the advice tendered to Ministers by the Chiefs of Staff.

Brigadier Clarke

Can the Minister say whether he took the advice of the Secretary of State for War on this matter? Is so, may I ask him not to take it in future, as we do not want any more tanks to go to Egypt?

Mr. Shinwell

I take advice from various quarters. I would even take advice from the hon. and gallant Member if I thought that that advice would be of any use to me.
