HC Deb 06 December 1950 vol 482 c330
5. Professor Savory

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he is satisfied that the terms of the treaty with Italy, to which His Majesty's Government was a party, have been carried out so far as the rights, secured under Annex 4, of the German-speaking population of South Tyrol are concerned.

Mr. Ernest Davies

I have no reason to suppose that the Italian Government are not carrying out their obligations in this regard.

Professor Savory

Is the hon. Gentleman not aware of the obstacles being placed in the way of the carrying out of Article I, paragraphs b and d, relating to the parity of languages and equality of employment? I am informed that every obstacle is being placed in the way of carrying out the provisions of these paragraphs.

Mr. Davies

This matter has been investigated further. My understanding is that the position has very much improved, that relations between Italy and Austria in this regard are very much better and that there is little dissatisfaction at the present time.

Professor Savory

I have evidence every day.
