HC Deb 05 December 1950 vol 482 c174
4. Sir John Mellor

asked the Minister of Labour whether, in view of the conduct of certain local authorities, he will introduce a Bill to re-enact Section 6 of the Trade Disputes and Trade Unions Act, 1927, which was repealed in 1946 and which prohibited public authorities from requiring employees to belong to a trade union, or to refrain from so belonging.

Mr. Isaacs

No, Sir.

Sir J. Mellor

If the Government do not repent of having enabled the local authorities to impose a "closed shop," is not their rebuke to the Durham County Council sheer hypocrisy?

Mr. Isaacs

I think the best way to handle this matter is the way that was suggested by my right hon. Friend the Lord President of the Council yesterday.
