HC Deb 05 December 1950 vol 482 c200
56. Mr. Maudling

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what directions on the restriction of credit for hire purchase have been given by his authority to the banks.

Mr. Gaitskell

In 1947, as part of the general campaign against inflation, the banks were asked not to increase the facilities they offered for financing hire purchase, particularly of consumer goods. These restrictions are just as necessary today.

Mr. Maudling

Can the Chancellor of the Exchequer give any estimate of the amount of these facilities now available?

Mr. Gaitskell

Perhaps the hon. Gentleman will put that Question on the Order Paper.
