HC Deb 25 April 1950 vol 474 cc752-3
8. Mr. Leslie Hale

asked the Minister of Labour what decision has been taken with regard to the future of the Belgrave Cotton Treading Mill at Oldham.

Mr. Isaacs

This centre, having served its purpose, will be closed when the lease expires on 29th September next.

Mr. Hale

Will my right hon. Friend say whether any consultations have taken place between his Department, the Members for Oldham and the Town Council of Oldham since the decision was made, and also whether it is not a fact that this centre has paid its way over this period and is greatly valued? Will he consider representations which have been made to extend its period of life?

Mr. Isaacs

It should be borne in mind what was the purpose of this centre. It was established to demonstrate to the cotton industry the value of this modern system of training full-time operators.

Over 1,000 trainees passed through the centre, and it is felt that the Government ought not to carry on the responsibility for training any more incoming people. However, I will look into the matter, as the hon. Gentleman suggests.
