HC Deb 19 April 1950 vol 474 c126
33. Sir Ian Fraser

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if the financial settlement with the Israeli Government, announced on 30th March, took into account the claims of British subjects who lost property as a result of compulsory evacuation.

Mr. Cook

No, Sir.

Sir I. Fraser

Can the hon. Gentleman say why these matters were not taken into account when many millions were concerned on both sides? Does it not seem somewhat unfair that the rights of British citizens should be left out of account when a financial settlement is made with a foreign Government?

Mr. Cook

As already stated by my right hon. Friend's predecessor, neither the Palestine Government nor the British Government would accept responsibility for any losses caused through compulsory evacuation.
