HC Deb 27 October 1949 vol 468 cc1516-7
48. Mr. Hurd

asked the Minister of Agriculture if he has now agreed with the representatives of farmers and the veterinary profession on a scheme for the establishment of clean areas where only attested cattle will be permitted; and when a start will be made.

The Minister of Agriculture (Mr. Thomas Williams)

I am afraid that I am not yet able to add anything to the reply given to the hon. Member on 4th April.

Mr. Hurd

Can the Minister give us some reason for the prolonged delay in starting this scheme for the eradication of tuberculosis?

Mr. Williams

As the hon. Member is aware, discussions have been proceeding for quite a long period, and the question of compensation and finance generally, perhaps may have caused the delay.

Major Sir Thomas Dugdale

Is it proposed to include the postponing of this scheme under the £6 million cuts announced earlier this week?

Mr. Williams

It is quite conceivable that there may be some deferment for a short period.

Sir T. Dugdale

Would not the Minister agree that it is a very undesirable way of saving expenditure when the whole object is to increase the supply of better class milk to the country?

Mr. Williams

I do, of course, but all economies are more or less painful.
