HC Deb 26 October 1949 vol 468 cc1305-6
42. Mr. Harold Davies

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he is aware of the growing death rate from tuberculosis in British Guiana; and whether he is prepared to grant funds to the British Guiana Society for the prevention and treatment of tuberculosis to purchase an X-ray plant for their dispensary.

Mr. Creech Jones

I am aware of the seriousness of this problem. The Government of British Guiana has made provision for improving tuberculosis services in its 10-year development plan.

Mr. Davies

May I ask my right hon. Friend, irrespective of the answer he has given, if he has arrived at any definite answer whether a small grant can be given to this society?

Mr. Creech Jones

We have made a very substantial grant under the Colonial. Development and Welfare Act for tuberculosis services, and part of the 10-year programme makes provision in regard to this particular disease.
