§ 35. Mr. Rankinasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what action is being taken on the recommendations of the Economic Commission of 1947–48 to modernise the railway in Mauritius in view of the falling revenue.
Mr. Creech JonesI assume my hon. Friend refers to the Commission's recommendation that experiments should be carried out in the use of diesel electric locomotives and light diesel passenger cars. The general manager of the Mauritius railways is shortly to discuss with the Crown Agents for the Colonies the advisability of ordering two diesel electric locomotives. The possibility of using light diesel cars is under consideration, but I understand that investigations so far raise doubts as to whether these cars would effect economies.
§ Mr. RankinCan my right hon. Friend say what steps are being taken to prevent the unemployment situation in Mauritius deteriorating still further as a result of the railway falling into disuse?
Mr. Creech JonesThere is no danger of the railway falling into disuse. The question of unemployment does not arise on this Question.
