§ 34. Mr. Skinnardasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether the proposals of the Committee appointed to revise the political constitution of the Fiji Islands have been approved.
Mr. Creech JonesThe Governor of Fiji has promised to send me his views on the Report of the Constitution Committee after that Report has been debated in the Legislative Council at the end of November. I am not, therefore, at present able to make any statement.
§ Mr. SkinnardWill my right hon. Friend bear in mind that it is important, whatever constitutional devices are decided upon, they should come into law before the general election?
Mr. Creech JonesI cannot give any undertaking at this stage, but I hope to meet the Governor within the course of a few weeks and discuss this matter.
§ Mr. SkinnardPerhaps my right hon. Friend will bear this in mind.
