HC Deb 26 October 1949 vol 468 c1318
34. Mr. Skinnard

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether the proposals of the Committee appointed to revise the political constitution of the Fiji Islands have been approved.

Mr. Creech Jones

The Governor of Fiji has promised to send me his views on the Report of the Constitution Committee after that Report has been debated in the Legislative Council at the end of November. I am not, therefore, at present able to make any statement.

Mr. Skinnard

Will my right hon. Friend bear in mind that it is important, whatever constitutional devices are decided upon, they should come into law before the general election?

Mr. Creech Jones

I cannot give any undertaking at this stage, but I hope to meet the Governor within the course of a few weeks and discuss this matter.

Mr. Skinnard

Perhaps my right hon. Friend will bear this in mind.
