HC Deb 28 November 1949 vol 470 cc771-2
46. Professor Savory

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he can now state the reply given by His Majesty's Government to the recent protests of the Swedish and Norwegian Ambassadors, and the Minister for Iceland, against the pressure on the Danish frontier caused by the large number of refugees from East Prussia and Pomerania.

Mr. Mayhew

No protest was made by the diplomatic representatives referred to. My right hon. Friend was informed of the views of the three Governments on the refugee problem in Schleswig Holstein, and undertook to give them sympathetic consideration.

Professor Savory

Does not the Under-Secretary realise the danger of this pressure on the common frontier of Scandinavia, owing to the fact that the refugees almost equal the native population in Schleswig Holstein?

Mr. Mayhew

We are aware of the difficulty, and it has been referred to several times. A full answer was given by myself in a recent Debate.
