HC Deb 28 November 1949 vol 470 cc762-3
27. Mr. Champion

asked the Minister of Transport if, having regard to the strong local feeling as expressed through the urban district council and the road safety committee, he will reconsider his decision not to replace the existing sign by a "Halt" sign at West Gate, Main Street junction, Long Eaton.

Mr. Barnes

Traffic conditions at this junction have been thoroughly examined, and I am satisfied that a "Halt" sign would be inappropriate. I have no evidence that the existing sign is inadequate.

Mr. Champion

Does the Minister not realise that it is not helpful to the road safety committee, who know the conditions locally and are anxious to help with road safety, when he does not agree to their conclusions and requests?

Mr. Barnes

I always take any local views into consideration, but I have had this problem very specially examined and my reply is based on the evidence obtained.
