HC Deb 28 November 1949 vol 470 c763
28. Mr. MacLeod

asked the Minister of Transport if he is aware of the public demand for an improved ferry service at Kyle of Lochalsh; and what action he proposes to take.

Mr. Barnes

The service at this ferry is operated by the British Transport Commission, who tell me that no improvement is possible with the existing craft, but they are now examining the possibility of providing a more suitable vessel. I am having a scheme prepared for the improvement of the ferry slipway at Kyle of Lochalsh so that the ferry can be operated at all states of the tide, but I am unable to say when it will be possible to carry out the constructional work.

Mr. MacLeod

The Minister will be aware of the great importance of this ferry for local trade and the tourist industry, so will he see that the plans are expedited and that something is done before the coming tourist season?

Mr. Barnes

I am aware of the importance of this crossing, having travelled on it myself; and it will be done as soon as circumstances permit.
