HC Deb 28 November 1949 vol 470 cc760-1
22. Mr. Francis Noel-Baker

asked the Minister of Transport what further steps he will take, and when, to reduce traffic congestion in Central London at mid-day and during office rush hours.

Mr. Barnes

I am constantly reviewing this problem in consultation with the London and Home Counties Traffic Advisory Committee. Extensive restrictions on waiting vehicles in the principal streets of Central London, and other traffic regulation schemes recently introduced, have improved the traffic flow, and I am considering further measures to reduce indiscriminate parking in the central area. The ultimate solution of this problem depends, however, upon major schemes which cannot be undertaken in present economic conditions.

Mr. Noel-Baker

Is my right hon. Friend not aware that, although restrictions on parking may help, they really have not done anything to solve the problem; and is he not considering the introduction at a very early date of more one-way streets?

Mr. Barnes

That is part of the proposals considered from time to time with the Traffic Advisory Committee.
