HC Deb 28 November 1949 vol 470 c774
56. Mr. Platts-Mills

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what has been the total dollar expenditure incurred by Great Britain, and calculated to the nearest convenient date, resulting from the setting up of the Bizone of Germany.

Mr. Mayhew

The total net dollar expenditure on relief imports and on the conversion of the sterling holdings of the Joint Export/Import Agency, under the Bizonal Agreements, has been 267 million dollars.

Mr. Platts-Mills

Is it not rather an expensive price to pay for the privilege of seeing the Americans run the whole show?

Mr. Mayhew

If the implication is that if we ran our zone by ourselves we should save dollars, that is quite untrue.

Mr. Platts-Mills

Is it not correct that if we ran it as we pledged we would run it, it would have cost us nothing?
