HC Deb 17 November 1949 vol 469 c2191
52. Mr. Stokes

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether he is aware that the practice of setting rabbit gins in the open on the cliffs in Cornwall in some districts has started again; and what measures he proposes to adopt in order to see that the law prohibiting this practice is not infringed.

Mr. T. Williams

No, Sir. Enforcement of the law which prohibits the setting of spring traps in the open for the purpose of catching rabbits is a matter for the police and any breaches should be reported to them.

Mr. Stokes

Am I to understand that my right hon. Friend does not know that this practice has been restarted? Is he aware that I am referring to the setting of traps actually on the cliffs and not inland? Consequently wild birds are being caught and large numbers are limping about on one leg.

Mr. Williams

I can only repeat that that is not a matter for the Ministry of Agriculture, but for the police.

Mr. Stokes

Should I be right in addressing the Home Secretary on the matter? May I ask the Home Secretary whether he is aware of this practice?
