HC Deb 17 November 1949 vol 469 cc2191-2
53. Squadron Leader Sir Gifford Fox

asked the Minister of Agriculture the cost per head per week of persons in hostels under his control last month; and how this figure compares with the cost for the same period 12 months ago.

Mr. T. Williams

The average cost in recent months has been about £1 15s. 9d. per head per week as compared with approximately £1 15s. in 1948. These figures are for operating costs, and do not include costs of providing and maintaining the hostels.

Sir G. Fox

Can the Minister say how the cost of food comes into those figures?

Mr. Williams

I am afraid I did not catch the hon. Member's question.

Sir G. Fox

What is the cost of food per week, separated from those figures?

Mr. Williams

I believe the cost of food is included in this figure of £1 15s. 9d., as well as all the other domestic accommodation within the hostel.

54. Sir G. Fox

asked the Minister of Agriculture the cost of bread per week per head of people living in hostels under his control at the present time and a week prior to devaluation respectively.

Mr. T. Williams

The cost of bread per person in agricultural hostels averages 2s. 2d. per week at the present time, as compared with 1s. 9¾d. before devaluation.
