HC Deb 17 November 1949 vol 469 cc2181-2
32. Sir Ian Fraser

asked the Minister of Health to what extent the ban on private building applies to schemes for the building of memorial and other houses for disabled ex-Service people by the British Legion and other ex-Service and regimental societies or similar building associations.

Mr. Bevan

Proposals for agreements between local authorities and housing associations which provide for a payment of Exchequer subsidy do not require licences, and are unaffected by the temporary suspension of licences. I should be ready to look sympathetically at any other individual proposals from societies of the kind to which the hon. Member refers, which need a licence and on which a decision may be required pending the further instructions which I shall shortly be issuing in regard to the erection of houses under licence.

Sir I. Fraser

Does the Minister's reply suggest that the further instructions may impose some limit?

Mr. Bevan

No, I have said that, if any of these societies want to apply for a licence to erect houses in the way the hon. Member has suggested, I should be happy to look into the matter.
