Mr. Boyd-Carpenterasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will state the average daily calorific value of the diet consumed at the latest convenient date by the inmates of His Majesty's prisons, specifying any differences that they may be in the cases of different classes of prisoners.
§ The Secretary of State for the Home Department (Mr. Ede)The overall average calorific value of prison diets on 8th November, 1949, was 3,192. I am circulating in the OFFICIAL REPORT particulars for the various classes of prisoners.
§ Following are the particulars:
- Local prisons—men, 3,126; women, 3,015.
- Regional and central prisons—men, 3,438; women, 3,015.
- Young prisoners—boys 3,306; girls, 3,155.
