HC Deb 17 November 1949 vol 469 cc2174-5
19. Mr. Skinnard

asked the Minister of Health, when he expects to receive the report of the Cope Committee on the training and qualifications of physiotherapists in the National Health Service.

Mr. Bevan

I hope that this report will be ready early next year.

Mr. Skinnard

Pending receipt of that report, will my right hon. Friend issue instructions that any qualified physiotherapist, whether a member of the chartered society or not, may apply for a post under the National Health scheme?

Mr. Bevan

I will not say anything at the moment until I receive the report.

Sir Ian Fraser

Before the Minister agrees with this report, will he consult the considerable number of bodies interested in physiotherapy, including ex-Service bodies?

Mr. Bevan

I understand that the committee are taking evidence from all bodies at the moment before they prepare the report, so that their advice will be to hand.

Mr. Skinnard

Is my right hon. Friend aware that certain hospital governing bodies are already anticipating what they think will be in that report?

Mr. Bevan

I know many people are anticipating what will be in the report, but I hope my hon. Friend will not follow that bad example.
