HC Deb 03 November 1949 vol 469 c584
42. Mr. Thomas Reid

asked the Minister of Health what was the rate of infant mortality for the latest available period and for a similar period before the war.

Mr. Bevan

The provisional figure for infant mortality in England and Wales for the third quarter of 1949 is 26 per 1,000 related live births; the corresponding figure for 1938 was 42 per 1,000 related live births.

Mr. Reid

Will my right hon. Friend continue the good work of continuing to save valuable British lives?

Mr. Baldwin

Is the Minister aware that during the 20 years of Tory misrule the infant mortality rate was also declining?

Mr. Bevan

Yes, the infant mortality rate was declining but at nothing like the rate it should have done.
