HC Deb 18 May 1949 vol 465 cc408-9
17. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what is the objection made by the Togoland farmers to the Cocoa Marketing Board; what consultations respecting the establishment and operation of the Board have taken place; to what extent cocoa trees in this area are affected by disease; and what steps will be taken to encourage the farmers to appreciate the purpose and advantage of the Board.

Mr. Creech Jones

I have asked the Acting Governor for information, and will write to my hon. Friend when it is received.

Mr. Sorensen

Is my right hon. Friend aware of the complaints on the part of farmers that they have not been consulted; and do I take it that he has had no information regarding those grievances?

Mr. Creech Jones

I have no information at all and nothing has been addressed to me. I believe certain rumours are current, but what their substance is, I am not quite clear.

Mr. Harrison

In seeking this information, will my right hon. Friend take the necessary steps to procure the information regarding the excellent work done by the Cocoa Board over the last two or three years, and add it to the list of information already collected?
