HC Deb 05 May 1949 vol 464 c1191
13. Mr. Derek Walker-Smith

asked the Minister of Health to what extent it is his practice to approve housing tenders to local authorities which include sums payable in respect of work required for opening ceremonies.

The Minister of Health (Mr. Aneurin Bevan)

It is not the practice to include work required for opening ceremonies in housing specifications or tenders.

Mr. Walker-Smith

Is the Minister aware that this has been done in at least one case, of which I can give him particulars, and would he not agree that it is undesirable that money should be so expended for these purposes?

Mr. Bevan

I should like to see particulars of the case to which the hon. Member refers. It has been the practice, I believe, to allow expenses for opening ceremonies in connection with large works, but I should have thought that the amount allowed for the opening ceremony was a microscopic part of the total expenditure. However, I will inquire into the case.
