HC Deb 15 March 1949 vol 462 cc1882-3
15. Mr. Piratin

asked the Minister of Labour how many ship repair workers were unemployed in the London area and in the country, respectively, at the latest available date.

Mr. Isaacs

At 14th February, the numbers of persons registered as unemployed in the London area and in Great Britain whose last employment had been in the shipbuilding or ship repairing industry were 653 and 11,846, respectively. Separate information is not available as to the numbers who were engaged on repair work.

Mr. Piratin

Could the Minister say what his Ministry is doing to provide work for these men, the London position being typical of that of the rest of the country?

Mr. Isaacs

The Ministry of Labour, in close co-operation with other Ministries concerned, arranges for either repair work or additional shipbuilding work to be done in areas where labour is available.
