HC Deb 21 July 1949 vol 467 cc1528-9
3. Mr. Harrison

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will consider the evidence given at a recent case heard in Nottingham to the effect that steps should be taken to prohibit the use in public places by juveniles of slot gaming machines; and what action does he propose to achieve this end.

Mr. Ede

The question of these machines will, no doubt, be considered by the Royal Commission on Betting, Lotteries and Gaming. I am calling for a full report on this case so that it will be available for the Royal Commission if required.

Mr. Harrison

Is my right hon. Friend aware of the fact that in today's Press it is reported, in connection with the proceedings of the Royal Commission, that the Home Office, owing to the vagueness of the position, cannot give the Commission any guidance?

Mr. Ede

I have said that I am calling for a full report. If that discloses anything which I can submit to the Commission, I shall do it. But one ought to be very careful about giving guidance to Royal Commissions.
