HC Deb 18 July 1949 vol 467 cc950-1
23. Sir J. Barlow

asked the Minister of Food whether he is satisfied that there are sufficient slaughterhouses to meet requirements in the North-Western area; and what he proposes to do to increase their capacity in the future.

Mr. Strachey

With the exception of certain places in North Wales, I am satisfied that the number of slaughterhouses in the North-Western area is adequate. We are planning to extend slaughtering capacity in North Wales.

Sir J. Barlow

Is the Minister aware that pigs have recently been shipped from the North-Western area to Glasgow to be slaughtered, thereby losing great weight on the way?

Mr. Strachey

We are aware that there is a difficulty in certain North Wales areas and the slaughtering facilities will be extended.
