HC Deb 18 July 1949 vol 467 c950
21. Miss Colman

asked the Minister of Food how many pigs have died during the recent hot weather at collecting centres or in transport vehicles on their way from collecting centres to bacon factories.

Mr. Strachey

We have no figures, but there is no reason to suppose that there have been many cases. If my hon. Friend will let me know of any, I will gladly investigate them.

22. Miss Colman

asked the Minister of Food whether arrangements can be made for pigs to be transported direct from owners to bacon factories during the summer months, and thus ensure that these animals are not exposed to the heat of the sun for long periods at collecting centres where there is often no covering or shelter.

Mr. Strachey

Producers can already send their pigs direct to bacon factories if they wish and about half the pigs we buy are handled in this way.
