81. Mr. Skinnard

asked the Minister of Supply whether, in view of the high prices charged for caravans by the firms to which the whole of the limited quantity of timber available is now allocated by his Department, he will make a proportion of this material available to individuals desirous of building their own caravans where urgent need for accommodation can be shown.

Mr. G. R. Strauss

No, Sir. It would not be appropriate to divert such scarce raw materials from the manufacturers.

Mr. Skinnard

In view of the fact that all the available materials for making caravans go to a few firms and that the prices are very high, will not my right hon. Friend reconsider this decision, specially in regard to timber for those making caravans to be their homes?

Mr. Strauss

I doubt whether that would be practicable. One of the advantages is that we see that a certain proportion of the caravans are exported.
