HC Deb 07 December 1949 vol 470 cc1866-7
38. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies in what Colonies picketing during industrial, disputes is illegal or prohibited, temporarily or otherwise.

Mr. Rees-Williams

In no Colonial Territory is peaceful picketing prohibited by law. In a number of territories, picketing in such numbers or otherwise in such manner as to be calculated to intimidate, is unlawful.

Mr. Sorensen

Might I ask the hon. Gentleman whether the latter reference applies to Nigeria, and can he say whether peaceful picketing has been prohibited in Nigeria at any time during the last six months?

Mr. Rees-Williams

Yes, it does apply to Nigeria. As to the latter part of the supplementary question, not so far as I am aware.
