HC Deb 07 December 1949 vol 470 c1867
39. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what censorship of correspondence and the Press is now operated in Nigeria.

Mr. Rees-Williams

My information is that Press censorship is in force in the Eastern Provinces only. I am not aware that any censorship of correspondence is in operation.

Mr. Sorensen

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that cables from this country to Nigeria have not been received for some time after despatch, and is he also aware that there is some evidence that correspondence from this country had been mutilated or defaced before reaching there?

Mr. Rees-Williams

No, I am not aware of that. I may say that the Governor has announced that the state of emergency will end tomorrow, in which case this matter will not arise again.
