HC Deb 17 November 1948 vol 458 cc366-7
42. Mr. Harrison

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether, in view of the present conditions in China, he will take every possible step to ensure that no illegal exports of valuable goods are permitted through the port of Hong Kong; and whether he will also tighten up the customs examinations between Kowloon and the Chinese hinterland.

Mr. Rees-Williams

I am communicating with the Governor of Hong Kong, and will write to my hon. Friend as soon as I receive the Governor's reply.

Mr. Harrison

Does my hon. Friend appreciate, in present unfortunate circumstances in China, the importance of stopping all illegal traffic at this juncture?

Mr. Rees-Williams

We have always appreciated the necessity of stopping illegal traffic and have always done our best to do so.
