HC Deb 17 November 1948 vol 458 c342
9. Dr. Segal

asked the Secretary of State for Air what is the length of the existing runways at Amman airfield; and whether these can be safely used by operational aircraft of the R.A.F.

Mr. A. Henderson

Amman airfield has three runways, the lengths of which are 670, 607 and 490 yards, respectively, This airfield is not used by operational aircraft of the R.A.F.

Dr. Segal

Is it not a fact that physical considerations prevent the extension of these runways to enable them to be used with safety by Royal Air Force aircraft?

Mr. Henderson

No, Sir. There is no intention of extending these runways, and, at present, they are used only for light communication types.

Mr. Janner

Can my right hon. and learned Friend say whether there has been any increase in the number of aeroplanes and other aviation equipment supplied to Transjordan recently, and whether there is any truth in the suggestion that large numbers of our men have been sent there?

Mr. Henderson

I can only speak for the Royal Air Force. So far as the airfield is concerned, I have said already that the only aircraft to use this airfield are light communication types, such as Ansons.
