HC Deb 15 November 1948 vol 458 c20
31. Mr. Wilson Harris

asked the Minister of Works whether he has yet reached a decision as to the future of the statue of General Gordon.

Mr. Key

Yes, Sir. I propose to put this statue in a public garden which will be laid out between the new Government Offices now being built in Whitehall and the Embankment. This site has been approved in principle by the Royal Fine Art Commission.

Mr. Wilson Harris

While I thank the right hon. Gentleman for his decision—a slightly deferred decision—which I think will give general satisfaction, may I ask him whether the General will be established in time to keep an eye on the development of the Exhibition site across the water?

Mr. Key

We all hope he will.
