HC Deb 09 November 1948 vol 457 c1368
28. Mr. E. P. Smith

asked the Minister of Town and Country Planning why his Department in Ashford, Kent, is advising farmers who are erecting cowsheds to paint them pink.

The Minister of Town and Country Planning (Mr. Silkin)

No such advice has been given at Ashford by any officer of my Department.

Mr. Smith

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that three such cases have occurred in my immediate vicinity; and, furthermore, will he bear in mind that cows are very conservative animals? Will he ensure that this is not an insidious attempt to socialise their minds?

Mr. Silkin

I have a complete alibi. I have not been anywhere near Ashford, and if any such advice was given, it was not given by any member of my Department. I am very interested to hear of the politics of the cows.
