HC Deb 03 November 1948 vol 457 c846
31. Mr. Scott-Elliot

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs how many persons were unemployed in the British sector of Berlin on 1st January last; and what is the comparable figure today.

The Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs (Mr. Ernest Bevin)

The total number of wholly unemployed registered at labour offices in the British Sector of Berlin on 31st December, 1947, was 10,663. On 30th September, 1948, the latest date for which information is available, the figure was 19,830.

Mr. Scott-Elliot

Can my right hon. Friend say whether employment is running fairly well in factories, or whether it has been necessary to find alternative employment?

Mr. Bevin

We have done our best to find some alternative means of employment; I admit that production is not so good as it was, but those are the figures.
